Feeling a Little Unsteady
Hold, hold on. Hold on to me, because I’m a little unsteady.
The song "Unsteady "by X-Ambassadors doesn’t have a ton of lyrics. In fact, the song doesn’t need many lyrics because the emotion comes through the music, the refrain, his authentic howl.
We all feel a bit unsteady at times. Sometimes we don’t know why. We drip with emotion; our healing process is coming up, we’re purging old hurts, old wounds. We see that we’re holding onto more than we thought we were. Another layer comes up and we think, didn’t I purge this already? Why is this coming up now? Haven't I healed this yet?
Sometimes we don't know what to do with all our emotions. Maybe it's just allowing them to flow freely out of our energetic body or channeling them into an artistic project, a canvas, a poem.
The song talks to so many things, without saying much:
Mama, come here, approach, appear
Daddy, I’m alone, cause this house don’t feel like home
If you love me, don’t let go.
Hold, hold on, hold on to me
because I’m a little unsteady…
Mother, I know, that you’re tired
of being alone
Dad, I know you’re trying to fight
when you feel like flying
Songs are mirrors—they bring out whatever is in us. What does it bring up for you? Is it about a romantic relationship? A child’s perspective of their parent’s relationship (and the turmoil of watching it fall apart?) Is it about the mother and father archetypes inside of us—our inner feminine getting too lost in our emotions, or the masculine side busy protecting our hearts or taking too much action and forgetting to receive. Or this song could be about all three layers happening all at once, since our love maps are born from our parent’s relationship, and that includes our relationship with ourselves.
Could this be abandonment? Mama, come here, approach, appear.
Could this be about the need for connection? Dad, I’m alone because this house don’t feel like home.
The song calls us home, to ourselves, to our real emotions. Sometimes we need to go inward, into the heaviness and pain, to then go outward again...lighter.
Right now, I’m taking a course on love, intimacy and sexuality. Apparently the most important thing in any relationship is strong communication–of our feelings, preferences, needs, desires. So why does that feel so hard sometimes? Are we afraid of our own truth not landing well with others? How can we face these things with another if we haven't faced them within ourselves?
Are we tired of being alone? Are we geared toward fighting instead of letting ourselves fly?
We all wrestle with these things—ourselves, our upbringing, our past relationship hurts. We wrestle with being human. The song was popular because it resonates. It reminds me of that SNL skit with Emma Stone about Adele’s song "Someone Like You," which caused people everywhere to break down and weep 😂. Laughter is often the antidote to this Venus in Scorpio energy where we are feeling called to face our dark, deep truths right now. Where honesty is do or die.
When we go through purging old love wounds because we want to show up for new love, we have to become aware of what we are holding onto that needs letting go—perhaps defense mechanisms we learned from our last relationship, or perhaps where we may now be avoiding relationships instead of appearing. Sometimes it’s a dance, and hopefully someone will hold onto you, the right person, when you are a little unsteady. Perhaps that person is you?
Soul-Prompt: How can I show up for myself when I’m feeling extra emotional? When I’m facing past hurts that are coming up for healing?
